A scholarship in memory of Catherine (Schmaltz) Jacobsen, a former nurse at Queen City Regional Medical Center in Spearfish, has been established at Black Hills State University.

The $10,000 scholarship endowment was donated by Queen City Regional Medical Center employees and patients, as well as Cathy’s family members and friends.

The scholarship will be awarded beginning in the fall of 2010. The recipient will be an incoming freshman; however, the funds won’t be applied until the student’s second year.
The scholarship will be given to a pre-nursing student with a 3.0 grade point average, and preference will be given to students from the Belle Fourche or Northern Black Hills region.

Cathy, who was a nurse at Queen City Regional Medical Clinic in Spearfish, passed away Sept. 7, 2008. Staff members say Cathy was loved by all who came into contact with her noting that even her patients have expressed their grief. Heather Jacobsen, Cathy’s daughter, is currently a student at BHSU.
