BHSU to host the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute Young Performers Competition

BHSU will host the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute Young Performers Competition Friday, June 12. Violinist Maya Lehmann of Rapid City, Last year’s winner in the age 9-14 category, with Dr. Johanna Meier, Director of the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute.

The Johanna Meier Opera Theater Young Performers Competition, sponsored by Black Hills State University and the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute, will be held Friday, June 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall.

Students who study classical voice or instruments will vie for cash prizes in two age categories: 9-14 and 15-20. First place winners will perform at the Celebration of the Arts Gala on Saturday, June 13, at 7:30 p.m.

Entrants are required to perform one memorized classical piece; the difficulty level will be intermediate to advanced. Contestants will be judged on poise and stage presence as well as musicianship. The public is welcome to attend the event; tickets are $5. For additional information and application forms, please contact Shelby Cihak at or call 642-6420 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. The application deadline is June 9.
