Rodeo Team dominates in Brookings

By Brad Lemmel, senior mass communication major from Faith

The Black Hills State University rodeo team put on an extraordinary performance at the Jackrabbit Stampede in Brookings April 3-5, where South Dakota State University hosted two rodeos. The Yellow Jackets brought home both the men’s and women’s combined team champion trophies from the weekend.

“Both our timed event end and our rough stock end stepped it up a notch,” said P.J. Painter, senior business administration major and Black Hills Rodeo Club president from Buffalo.

Painter won the men’s combined all-around buckle this weekend, while the Jackets’ own Amy Holmes, senior business administration major from Oregon, Wis., won the women’s combined all-around buckle.

BHSU individual buckle winners from the first rodeo include Chuck Schmidt, junior history major from Keldron (saddle bronc); Taylor Williams, freshman business administration major Volborg, Mont. (team roping header); Haley Anderson, junior business administration major from Glendive, Mont. (breakaway roping); and Holmes (goat tying).

The individual buckle winners from the second rodeo include Tyler Manke, junior business administration major from Hermosa (saddle bronc); Jakob Smith, junior business administration major from Whitewood (bareback); Marvin Heesacker, senior business administration major from Gillette, Wyo. (team roping heeler); and Painter (men’s all-around). See complete list of results.

BHSU rodeo coach Glen Lammers was pleased after the successful weekend. “It was a great weekend for our team,” said Lammers. “Our team has worked hard all winter to prepare and this weekend our team was ready to perform. It’s very beneficial that the Lantis family provides us with a great indoor facility to practice in during the off-season.”

Lammers said, “Having someone from our team place in every event at the first rodeo definitely gives us some momentum going into the spring season.”

The Yellow Jackets head to Lincoln, Neb. April 17-18 for their next competition and will host the annual Will Lantis Yellow Jacket Stampede Rodeo Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25 at the Seven Down Arena.
