Black Hills State University will host the annual Kevin Whirlwind Horse Memorial Run/Walk fundraiser Saturday, April 18. The event, an integral part of Indian Awareness Week at BHSU, raises funds to support a yearly scholarship presented to a Native American sophomore who demonstrates outstanding academic ability and leadership skills.
The Memorial Run/Walk was organized in memory of Kevin Whirlwind Horse, a former BHSU student who was killed in 1984 in a car accident. Whirlwind Horse was an active and respected student leader, and the fundraiser serves to recognize the achievements of students working to enrich their environment and positively transform the lives of others, through their pursuit of higher education.
Registration begins at 10 a.m. in Salem Park, which is located at 425 Quincy Street in Spearfish. The registration fee is $15 and all participants will receive a t-shirt.
There is a race for every age. The course is a walking path that winds through the Spearfish City Park and toward Spearfish Canyon and back to the starting point. A map of the route will be posted in Salem Park prior to the race. The scholarship will be presented following the race award presentations.
