Jeff Beals, author and businessman, will be a featured speaker at the career management conference at Black Hills State University Saturday, Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Beals is vice president of Coldwell Banker Commercial World Group and the author of “Self Marketing Power: Branding yourself as a Business of One.”
In his presentation, Beals helps individuals build a personal brand while striking balance between healthy self promotion and bragging. The presentation covers how to promote your brand to your personal target audience, how to become a celebrity inside your sphere of interest, how to get real results from your networking efforts, harnessing the media for your advantage, and why an attitude of success is critical to self marketing.
Throughout the day there will be a variety of breakout sessions for participants to attend. Sean Donnelly, S.D. Department of Labor, will be presenting on interviewing skills; Deaver Traywick, director of the writing center at BHSU, will conduct a session on completing graduate school applications; Curt Lauinger, Western Dakota Technical Institute, will be giving advice on how to attend and make the most of career fairs; and Mark Kjellerson, Ellsworth Air Force Base, will be presenting information on federal jobs and the application process.
There will also be an alumni panel discussion called, “Making the Right Impression.” Panel members include: Jesse Wilkins, Class of 2007, Mattress Firm; Sean Donnelly, Class of 2007, S.D. Department of Labor; Richard Raridon, Class of 2007, BHSU Office of Civic Engagement; and Sara Elias, Class of 2005, BHSU Career Center. The discussion will focus on the importance of making a good impression at interviews and while networking. The panel will also discuss why professionalism matters.
The conference will be held in the in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Jacket Legacy Room. It is free to students, alumni, staff, and faculty with their BUZZ card. General registration is $25. Pre-registration is required by Thursday, Feb. 5.
