Nearly 300 people turned out this year for the 10th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Chili/Soup Supper. Over 200 food items were donated and nearly $950 both benefitting the Spearfish Food Pantry.
According to Nancy Wietgrefe, director of Retired Senior Volunteer Program(RSVP) at Black Hills State University although attendance was down, the monetary donations were at an all-time high.”
Wietgrefe would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Woodard and the Spearfish Middle School sixth grade choir for their wonderful musical entertainment for this event, Mr. Syman’s art students for the posters to display, and to the BHSU VISTA volunteers who helped set up, serve, and clean up.
Also, a thank you goes out to the churches that participated this year: All Angels Episcopal, Christian Science Society, Countryside Community Church, Hope Lutheran Church, Mt. View Baptist Church, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and the United Methodist Church.
Wietgrefe added that, “We are grateful to Mt. View Baptist Church for serving as our host site and to Waylon Grout and Mike Sanders and his family for their help in getting set up and organized. Thank you to Bob and Kathy Schneider for providing the chili for RSVP and to the RSVP volunteers who donated bars and cookies, served, cleaned and helped throughout the evening.”
The church with the most “votes” in the penny jars was Hope Lutheran Church. A total of $125.70 was collected for the voting jars and that, too, is included in the monetary donation to the food pantry.
Wietgrefe also thanks Lueder’s, Safeway, and Wal-Mart for their donation of products to help in this community endeavor. She also extends a thank you to the AmeriCorps*VISTA C-U-R-E office, the Spearfish Senior Citizens Center, and the area churches for being co-sponsors with RSVP and for providing chili, soup, servers, helpers and advertising.
Wietgrefe lastly wanted to extend a thank you to BHSU for supporting RSVP.
