Mallory Petersen, junior Black Hills State University instrumental music instruction major from Pierre, was the recipient of the 2008 Family Scholarship from the South Dakota Department of Corrections.  Petersen was awarded a $1,000 scholarship at their annual fall conference in Spearfish.

Her winning essay titled, “Music Education: Decrease the Youth Population in the South Dakota Court System”, focuses on encouraging music education. The essay discusses how research groups have found music does indeed play a role in learning.  Testing scores were rated 25 percent higher if a child is involved in some type of avid music activity.  In addition, participation in a form of music performance helps young adults focus on a positive aspect of life eliminating the negative stimuli that often causes teens to end up in the court system.
