BHSU library celebrates 66th year in the Federal Depository Library Program

The Black Hills State University E.Y. Berry Library-Learning Center is celebrating its 66th year as a participant of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP).

The FDLP was established by Congress to ensure that the American public has access to Government information. The FDLP provides Government information at no cost to designated depository libraries throughout the country and territories. These depository libraries, in turn, provide local, no-fee access to Government information in an impartial environment with professional assistance.

There are 1,250 depository libraries located in the United States; South Dakota currently has nine designated libraries. The BHSU library receives 30 percent of what the government publishes. Materials are located on the top floor of the library and are available online. All members of the public are invited and encouraged to peruse the materials at anytime.

Government information is available on a variety of subjects and in various formats including paper, microfiche, maps, CD-ROM, DVD, video, and online.

The Library-Learning Center at BHSU will have an exhibit Nov. 1 -15, which briefly highlights the history of the United States Federal Depository Program. This will be displayed on the main floor of the library.

In celebration of the anniversary, the library will also host an open house Thursday Nov. 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third floor of the library in the Government Documents section. Refreshments will be served.
