The 12th Annual Black Hills State University Swarm Days Disc Golf Tournament was recently held on the campus disc golf course with a record number of 50 participants.
Kevin Schwan, junior mass communication major from Aberdeen, had a near perfect performance on the course with a 10 under par score of 44.
Par for the 18-hole course is 54. The winners for the BHSU student tournament were: first place – Schwan, with a score of 44; second place – Josh Jangula, senior wellness management major from Aberdeen, with a score of 48; third place was tied between Andrew Wachs, a sophomore outdoor education from Aberdeen and Dustin Work, a junior wellness management from Rapid City, with a score of 49; fourth place was also tied between Aaron Anderson, a sophomore English major from Lake Preston and Aaron Webster, a junior history major from Spearfish, with a score of 50; fifth place – Michael Roberts, junior business administration major from Spearfish; with a score of 51; there was a four way tie for sixth place – Brett Schmidt, a freshman business administration major from Scottsbluff; Brandon Baker, a freshman biology from Ekalaka, Mont.; Ethan Plumb, a sophomore business administration major from Rapid City; and Josh Green, a junior physical education major from Gillette, Wyo.; all with a score of 52.
In the community division, a new 20-hole par 60 layout was introduced to the players. Ryan Smith, president of the Countryside Disc Golf Club, scored an impressive 48 – 12 under par.
The top players in the community division were: first place – Smith, Spearfish, with a score of 48; second place – Tyler Scovell, Spearfish, with a score of 50; third place – Don Altmyer, Spearfish, with a score of 51; fourth place – Dallas Horsley, Whitewood, with a score of 52; fifth place – a tie between Schwan, and Nelson Horsley, Whitewood, with a score of 53; sixth place – tied between Wachs, and Hudson Horsley, Whitewood, with a score of 54; seventh place – Adam Cortez, Spearfish, with a score of 56; and eighth place – Brice Johnson, Spearfish, with a score of 57.
Prizes and refreshments were provided by the BHSU Swarm Days Homecoming Committee, the BHSU Bookstore, and the Countryside Disc Golf Club. The next two on-campus disc golf tournaments are:
- Shawn Funk Memorial Ice Bowl – the weekend before the Super Bowl, proceeds will go to the Spearfish Food Bank.
- 9th Annual Spring Fling – May 1, 2009, there will be student and community divisions.
