Dr. Janeen Larsen, Black Hills State University music professor, will perform as part of the Rapid City Chamber Society concert series Sunday, Jan. 28. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Rapid City.

thumb_scottie_bruch.jpgResponding to a shortage of trained librarians in the state, Black Hills State University developed a library media program that is available entirely online. This fall the BHSU College of Education and the E.Y. Berry Library-Learning Center reintroduced the library media program in a completely online format. The program has generated a lot of interest and enrollment tripled this fall.

thumb_international_teacher.jpg Four Black Hills State University education students are embarking on a pilot program to do their student teaching experience overseas. The BHSU College of Education students who will enhance their education with an international student teaching experience are: Kayla Morrison, Deadwood; Jennifer Doak, Gillette, Wyo.; and Abby Blaha, Rapid City, who will all be traveling to New Zealand; and Megan Bietz, Gillette, Wyo., who will be student teaching in Australia.

The academic affairs office at Black Hills State University has released the dean’s list for the fall 2006 semester. A total of 465 students were named to the dean’s list. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above while taking at least 12 credit hours to be named to the dean’s list. Students are listed by hometown or current place of residence.

thumb_big_5.jpg The Black Hills State University alumni association is hosting a 100 Years of Men’s Basketball celebration Feb. 2 and 3. To celebrate this milestone, BHSU has designated an All-Century Basketball Team consisting of the 100 top achieving men’s basketball players at BHSU in the last century. One coach was also chosen to represent the All-Century Team.

haislett_judith.jpg Dr. Judith Haislett, vice president for student life at Black Hills State University, is taking on a new position as assistant to the president and director of special projects as of July 1, 2007. In her new position, Haislett will oversee several special projects including serving as chairperson for the 125th Anniversary Celebration for BHSU, coordinating emergency planning procedures, and managing the review and development of the university policy manual.  She will also coordinate training and professional development for the campus by assisting with staff orientation and creating on-going faculty and staff professional development events.

Young Sports and Fitness Center giving students the opportunity to gain essential experience as a part of several changes at the Young Center. The students will become much more involved in fitness training as well as becoming involved in management and operational roles.

A group of 20 Black Hills State University students and staff members will embark on the experience of a lifetime this March as they travel to Louisiana to assist with hurricane relief efforts during spring break. While some college students choose to soak up the Mexican sun or work to earn extra money, this group of dedicated individuals will volunteer their time gutting houses, removing mold, and working with displaced hurricane victims in New Orleans.

Black Hills State University is hosting four teacher training workshops for the South Dakota Stock Market Game (SDSMG) program, a real-time online stock market simulation in which teams of students research and purchase a portfolio of stocks. Middle and high school teachers are invited to attend the free three-hour training workshops.

Auditions and an information meeting for The Vagina Monologues, based on the play by Eve Ensler, will be held Monday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Jonas Hall Room 305 on the Black Hills State University campus. There are 10-12 female roles available. Males are encouraged to be involved in other parts of the production, including ticket sales, publicity, lights, sound, makeup and program/ticket design.
