Black Hills State University students trick or treating for a cause collected over 1,300 items for the Spearfish Food Pantry and the Artemis House recently.

Black Hills State University recently hosted a Volleyball Reunion in conjunction with Swarm Day festivities. Reunion participants attended the BHSU volleyball game and were introduced between the second and third set of the match.

Black Hills State University is sponsoring the 9th Annual Red Shirt Cultural Holiday Exchange, which includes a collection of toys and funds along with at visit by BHSU students to the Red Shirt School. The event, which began as two-student project in 2000, has grown into a campus wide event with participation numerous organizations.

Black Hills State University will host “First Fridays: Breakfast with the Arts” Nov. 6 at 9:30 a.m., in Clare & Josef Meier Hall, Room 128 on the BHSU campus.

Black Hills State University athletics will host multiple athletic events this weekend including the football game against S.D. School of Mines and Technology and the home opener of men’s and women’s basketball.

The Black Hills State University music students now have access to a new grand piano which was donated by Dwight and Sharlotte Miller from Spearfish in support of their daughters’ interest in music and in memory of their grandmother who had a lifelong interest in music.

The Black Hills State University concert band played two concerts recently to raise money for Honor Flight South Dakota. More than $1800 was raised from donations taken at the door.

Nearly 150 people attended two South Dakota Certified Public Accountant Society Accounting Showcases in Spearfish and Rapid City, hosted by Black Hills State University.

A presentation on the past and future of the Homestake Mine will be presented by Steven T. Mitchell and Dr. Jose Alonso Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Adams Museum at 1 p.m.

Black Hills State University recently co-hosted the 2009 Regional ASPIRE Conference with the South Dakota TRiO programs. Over 250 TRiO participants from Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, North Dakota, and South Dakota were in attendance.

Kent Meyers, writer in residence and associate professor of humanities at Black Hills State University, recently presented a book reading and signing on campus. His latest novel Twisted Tree is receiving national attention. The book was recently reviewed in People magazine (which gave it 3 ½ stars out of a possible of 4), the Washington Post and many other national and regional publications.

A program at Black Hills State University, known as Project PRIME, was singled out by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today in a speech at Columbia University.

Students of the Black Hills State University student organization People for the Ethical Treatment of the Environment (P.E.T.E.) along with Hills Horizon, will host a 350 Climate Celebration Saturday, Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. at the bandshell in the Spearfish City Park.

The BHSU Educational Outreach Office in conjunction with the Marketing and Communications office will host an open house in their newly renovated offices on Thursday, Oct. 29 from 2-4 p.m.

Dr. Dean Myers, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Black Hills State University, has announced his retirement effective at the end of this academic year. A national search will begin immediately to fill the provost position at BHSU.

Black Hills State University is making changes to accommodate the greatly increased use of laptop computers by students. A survey conducted as students moved into residence halls this fall revealed that nearly 90 percent of students brought a computer with them. That number is consistent with a national and regional trend in recent years.

Three Black Hills State University student organizations were recently recognized by the South Dakota Board of Regents for their outstanding academic, community and organizational work.

In celebration of American Archives Month, the Black Hills State University Leland D. Case Library for Western Historical Studies and BHSU Archives will hold an open house on Oct. 29th from 2-5 p.m.
