Join us for Geek Speak! Children Beware! Stephen King, Fairy Tales, and Evil in Its Many Forms. Hosted by Dr. Laura Colmenero-Chilberg, this lecture will investigate how King’s novels parallel our beloved original fairy tales. Evil in its many forms is the central focus of most of Stephen King’s novels and is also the central focus of a great number of our traditional fairy tales.

There are other threads that weave their way throughout King’s writing as well as through the canon of fairy tales including the power and importance of children, abusive families, monsters that really do exist, and the saving power of love and friendship. Whether it is the evil clown in It or the emotional and physical pain of the title character in Carrie, King’s sophisticated targeting of the frightened child hidden within each one of us continues a rich tradition usually found in fairy tales. Horror fiction and fairy tales … who knew how much they were alike? The focus will be on two of King’s novels – Carrie (1974) and It (1986).
