In addition to meeting with students and faculty members, BHSU will host Mrs. Daugaard for a public presentation Wednesday, Sept. 19. The reception begins at 7 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7:30 p.m. in Meier Recital Hall on the BHSU campus in Spearfish. A limited number of free tickets are available by emailing

“We are honored and humbled to have the First Lady of South Dakota, Mrs. Linda Daugaard, speak on campus,” BHSU Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr., says. “Mrs. Daugaard is a strong advocate for children and families. Her work is inspiring. We are pleased to have this opportunity to hear more about her work and learn from her experiences.”

Since becoming South Dakota’s First Lady in January 2011, Mrs. Daugaard has been committed to promoting reading and keeping South Dakota children safe.

Mrs. Daugaard’s areas of focus are promoting literacy, reducing infant mortality, reducing early elective deliveries, and promoting FosterOne, the state’s foster care program. She also showcases the South Dakota Governor’s Mansion.

Linda (Schmidt) Daugaard grew up in Dell Rapids, S.D. She is the third of twelve children. After graduating from high school, Linda attended South Dakota State University and obtained her degree in physical education and a teaching certificate. She then returned to Dell Rapids where she taught and coached the school’s first girls basketball team. Linda also worked several years at the university level at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., and the University of California-Davis in Davis, Calif.

The Presidential Lecture Series, established by Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr., BHSU President, features presentations by prestigious public speakers from across the nation focusing on thought-provoking topics. Previous speakers include Dr. Kevin Rome, President of Lincoln University, and Craig Johnson, author of the Longmire series. For more information see:
