Black Hills State University-Rapid City hosting Speaker Series for community

Author: BHSU Communications/Monday, February 11, 2019/Categories: Events, Students, Community, Events

Providing an opportunity for Rapid City-area students and community members to learn about important social topics, Black Hills State University-Rapid City is hosting a Speaker Series with presentations on alternating Mondays from 6-7:30 p.m. in Room 112.

BHSU-RC Coordinator of Admissions, Jacob Hamik says the Speaker Series promises to be thought-provoking with discussion of topics not normally examined in great depth in everyday conversation.

“We wanted to give our students and community members the opportunity to hear a variety of topics presented by experts in their fields. The Speaker Series is a great way for us to do that. In the past we’ve had presenters speak on the Third Reich, marijuana, and Islam. This year we have presentations on classroom teaching styles, sex trafficking, service dogs, and more,” said Hamik.

Upcoming presentations include:
Monday, Feb. 11: Dr. Gerald McGraw, Assistant Professor: “The Open Classroom or the Hybrid Hybrid”
Monday, Feb. 25: Hollie Strand, Forensic Examiner: “Current Trends in the Online Exploitation of Children”
Monday, Mar. 11: William Cockrell, Instructor of Behavioral Sciences: “Sex and the Media: An Evaluation of Modern Pop Culture and Sexual Health”
Monday, Mar. 18: Carol Salveson and Becky Flanagan: “The Value of Assistance Dogs and their Different Roles”
Monday, Mar. 25: Dr. Lesleigh Owen, Lecturer of Sociology: “Poverty and Food Insecurity”
Monday, Apr. 1: Dr. Jeff Wehrung, Chair and Associate Professor in the School of Business: “Why we need Science Fiction”
