Black Hills State University was named one of the “Best Colleges for Student Voting” by Washington Monthly, a national publication.

In the Washington Monthly article, writer Robert Kelchen says that “college students…are not known for high voter turnout rates.” According to Census data, 16 percent of 18-24 year-olds reported voting in the 2014 midterms, compared to 59 percent of adults aged 65-74.

BHSU students are aiming to change these statistics. Throughout fall semester, the BHSU Student Senate has published civic engagement videos on social media to encourage young adults to vote. The Student Senate is also providing transportation to the Spearfish polls from 1-6 p.m. on Election Day. Buses will leave on the hour, every hour from the Student Union and Meier Hall circles.

To make the list of “Best Colleges for Student Voting,” BHSU and other colleges and universities needed to meet four scoring criteria:
  • Participation in the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE), which allows colleges to calculate their voter registration and turnout rates
  • Make their NSLVE data (including voter turnout rates) publically available
  • Sign up for ALL IN, which helps colleges develop action plans around civic engagement
  • Make their ALL IN action plans publically available
BHSU is the only university in South Dakota included on the “Best Colleges for Student Voting” list. See the whole list here: The Washington Monthly is an independent online publication with a goal of improving government by offering innovative solutions.
