SD GEAR UP at BHSU Summer Program to present closing ceremony

The SD GEAR UP at Black Hills State University Summer Honors Program concludes this week with a Closing Ceremony to be held in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union, Jacket Legacy Room, on Friday, July 1 at 11 a.m. The purpose of SD GEAR UP at BHSU is to increase the number of students who graduate from high school and are prepared for post-secondary education.

SPEARFISH... High school students participating in the SD GEAR UP at Black Hills State University Summer Honors Program will celebrate the conclusion of the three-week, residential, precollege enrichment program with a ceremony at BHSU.

The GEAR UP Closing Ceremony will be held Friday, July 1 at 11 a.m. in the Jacket Legacy Room on the second floor of the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union on the BHSU campus in Spearfish.

GEAR UP staff and BHSU President Tom Jackson, Jr., will speak at the ceremony. GEAR UP student participants will present short videos on their experience before receiving certificates of completion. Staff who have been working directly with the students will awards of recognition to students who have demonstrated excellence inside and/or outside the classroom.

Activities throughout the three weeks included academic coursework with high expectations for performance, mentorship to assist students in developing an academic mindset, and cultural activities to promote a healthy lifestyle in connection with students' heritage. Students spent the third week of the summer program at Placerville Camp, an off-campus site located six miles from Pactola Lake in the Black Hills. Students participated in enriching, educational activities at Placerville including a focus on the history, geography, and ecosystem of the Black Hills.

The SD GEAR UP Program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) at BHSU is funded by the U.S. Department of Education to the South Dakota Department of Education. The goal of the SD GEAR UP Program is to increase the number of students prepared to graduate from college. SD GEAR UP seeks to accomplish this goal by collaborating with middle and high schools throughout the state including many schools on American Indian Reservations in South Dakota. A specific focus of SD GEAR UP is to increase the number of American Indian students that achieve success at the post-secondary level.
