Black Hills State University invites the public to a Grand Opening celebrating the completion of the Sanford Science Education Center (SSEC) at BHSU and the outfitting of the BHSU Underground Campus at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (Sanford Lab).

The Grand Opening will be held Monday, May 9 at 11 a.m. at the SSEC in Jonas Science Hall on the BHSU campus.

Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr., BHSU president, said the Sanford Science Education Center draws upon the science of Sanford Lab and the educational resources of BHSU to inspire, engage, and connect learners of all ages.

"A mile below the earth's surface, BHSU is making a truly significant contribution to science and innovation, and this is only the beginning," said Jackson.

The BHSU Underground Campus at Sanford Lab is already in use by BHSU along with regional and national partners. BHSU students and faculty are conducting multidisciplinary research using the cleanroom and adjoining workspace at the 4850 Level of Sanford Lab. Current research and projects are being conducted in the fields of physics, biology, geology and environmental physical science.

In 2013, BHSU began working with Sanford Lab to plan and secure funding to support the Underground Campus. The South Dakota Science and Technology Authority provided space at the 4850 Level of Sanford Lab to outfit the Underground Campus.
