Students and faculty from Black Hills State University were accepted into the upcoming 12th Annual Dahl Mountain Photo Competition and Exhibit. The exhibition showcases "mountain culture" in a unique and diverse representation of our wilderness areas.

The opening reception for the exhibit is Friday, April 1 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City. The exhibition runs April 1 through May 7 during the Dahl Mountain Culture Festival.

A photo by Jerry Rawlings, assistant professor of mass communication at BHSU, was juried into the exhibition along with photos by six BHSU students.

"It is an honor to be chosen once again to exhibit in the Dahl Mountain Show. The best part about this year&rsquos exhibition is that I will be exhibiting with several of my students, and that makes me extremely proud," said Rawlings.

Steve Babbitt, professor of mass communication at BHSU and a judge for the event, noted that more than 200 entries were submitted by the public for the competition. Throughout a blind jury process, 36 adult and 19 youth (age 18 and under) photographs were selected.

"It is always exciting to help jury the Dahl Mountain Photo Competition. There were, once again, a wide range of images submitted that represent the diverse idea and aesthetic of mountain culture," said Babbitt. "The Dahl curatorial staff always does an amazing job of mounting a cohesive and beautiful exhibit, especially given the wide range of subject matter chosen for the exhibit. I am especially gratified by the number of youth entries we had this year."

BHSU student artists accepted into the exhibition include:
  • Laura Heisinger, senior mass communication major from Mitchell
  • Jamison Hogan, freshman mass communication major from Spearfish
  • Taylee Hudson, freshman business administration major from Sturgis
  • Caleb Munger, senior graphic design communication major from Newcastle, Wyo.
