Physical education program at BHSU receives national recognition

           The physical education program at Black Hills State University was awarded national recognition by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education recently, confirming the program&rsquos quality in preparing students to create, teach and assess physical education lessons in K-12 education.

           

       

   



The Black Hills State University physical education program was recently awarded continuing national recognition by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The recognition affirms that BHSU students are receiving a state-of-the-art, cutting edge education.

Dr. Pat Simpson, dean of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, said the recognition is significant as BHSU met all NASPE standards, receiving full recognition of the University&rsquos physical education program with no further conditions or recommendations.

"This demonstrates that our physical education program has once again met national standards of the highest quality," said Simpson. "Our students can go forward into careers being particularly proud of what they have achieved, and our faculty should feel very proud of their work."

The physical education major at BHSU focuses on understanding how the human body moves to help others develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities to live active, healthy lifestyles. Well qualified faculty at BHSU help students develop performance and teaching skills needed to create, teach and assess physical education lessons in K-12 education.

Dr. Betsy Silva, associate professor of physical education/pedagogy and assessment coordinator, said the recognition affirms that BHSU students are receiving a state-of-the-art, cutting edge education.

"When a BHSU physical education student is hired in a school district, the NASPE recognition demonstrates that our teachers are effective and knowledgeable, that they how to work with the students and build a good program," said Silva.
