When Mae Whirlwind Horse describes her son, Kevin, she speaks with love and respect for a young man who planned to follow in his father&rsquos footsteps as a rancher and tribal leader.

Sunday, April 12 marks the 30th year athletes and community members will gather to honor Kevin&rsquos memory during the annual Kevin Whirlwind Horse Memorial Walk/Run at Black Hills State University. Kevin died tragically in a 1984 car accident. He was a student at BHSU studying political science.

"Kevin was always a very athletic person. He worked on the ranch, rode horseback and loved boxing.  The memorial run is a very fitting memorial for my son," said Whirlwind Horse.

During the Walk/Run April 12, the BHSU track &amp field and cross country teams operate the race timing, registration and results. The quarter- and half-mile races begin at 10:30 a.m. at Lyle Hare Stadium followed by the one-mile walk, 10K and 5K runs. Registration is $20 and includes a t-shirt. All proceeds help to fund the Kevin Whirlwind Horse Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Each year, a $500 scholarship is awarded to a Native American student at BHSU at the conclusion of the race events.

"Even if it just pays for books or some expenses, the scholarship helps the students," said Whirlwind Horse. "After Kevin&rsquos dad died, he had to get a loan for school and work part-time. I think Kevin would be glad to know that students receive this support in his memory."
