BHSU adds new certificate program in criminal justice

           Black Hills State University now offers a Certificate in Criminal Justice after the program was approved at the South Dakota Board of Regents meeting in Pierre recently. The new certificate program will be offered through distance delivery. With the addition of a Certificate in Criminal Justice, BHSU now offers 16 certificate programs.  

       

   



Black Hills State University will offer a Certificate in Criminal Justice after the program was approved at the South Dakota Board of Regents meeting in Pierre recently.

The BOR approved a Certificate in Criminal Justice to create more professional development opportunities for law enforcement personnel in western South Dakota. The new certificate will require 12 credit hours of study and be offered through distance delivery.



"There is a strong demand for courses in the criminal justice area, both by individuals working within the criminal justice system who are looking for opportunities to upgrade their skills, as well as by our regular student body," said Dr. Rod Custer, provost and vice president for academic affairs at BHSU.

The Certificate in Criminal Justice will be offered beginning the fall 2015 semester. Those enrolled in the program will need to complete the following courses:

&middot Introduction to Sociology

&middot Introduction to Criminal Justice

&middot Criminology

&middot Prisons and Penology or Community Corrections



With the new Certificate in Criminal Justice, BHSU now offers 16 certificate programs. In addition to a Certificate in Criminal Justice BHSU offers a Certificate in Archives, Entrepreneurial Studies, Graphic Design, Guitar Performance, Historical Site Interpretation, Journalism, Management, Management Information Systems, Museums, Photography, Piano Pedagogy, Professional Writing, Social and Cultural Awareness,  Social Resiliency, and Theatre Production.



BHSU-Rapid City offers eight of the BHSU certificate programs, including Certificates in Archives, Entrepreneurial Studies, Graphic Design, Journalism, Management, Museums, Social &amp Cultural Awareness and Social Resiliency. The new Certificate in Criminal Justice and a Certificate in Professional Writing can be earned through BHSU via distance delivery.



Certificate programs allow students to develop expertise in a focused area of studies or enhance workforce development needs through a smaller set of courses.
