Black Hills State University professor of math education, Dr. John Alsup, will share insights from his recent trip to Russia in a public lecture titled "Inside Russia Today" on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in Meier Hall Concert Hall.

"I will share my glimpse of what I saw from inside Russia and my experience staying with a Russian family for ten days," said Alsup.

Alsup traveled to Russia in late May 2014 during the Ukraine crisis, visiting the political hotspot during the Ukraine elections to present his research at an international academic conference.

"Television news centered on the Russia/Ukraine conflict for several hours each night with patriotic music, Russian nationalism, and propaganda," said Alsup.  "Even within the family I stayed with, there was divergence of opinion about the politics."

Alsup, also chair of the University's multicultural committee, plans to share a variety of his experiences in Russia including cultural and culinary practices as well as photos of Moscow and St. Petersburg.  He brought back two souvenirs from his recent trip, a piece of his family's porcelain collection called "gzel" and red and black painted, wooden dishes called "hohloma."

An avid traveler, Alsup has visited six continents in five years after being inspired when teaching math in rural Tanzania.

"When I come back from global trips, I like to talk about them and share the experiences," said Alsup.

The "Inside Russia Today" lecture is supported by the BHSU Multicultural Committee.  The lecture is free and open to the public.
