The Black Hills State University Enactus Team presents a check to Shauna Junek, director of development for University Advancement at BHSU, for $120, which was raised during this year's Scholar Dollar 5K. The money raised will go toward a future Business Leadership Scholarship at BHSU.

The Black Hills State University Enactus Team hosts a 5K race and shoe drive to continue its mission to raise money for a Business Leadership Scholarship and provide community service.

The Enactus Team's annual Scholar Dollar 5K, held earlier this year, raised $120, which will go toward a future Business Leadership Scholarship for BHSU business students.

In conjunction with this year's 5K, the club held a shoe drive to collect used running shoes for third world countries. The group collected 320 pairs of shoes during the time of the race promotion. Shoes that were too worn down to donate were sent to a recycling center.

"The shoe drive really allowed us to get the community involved," said Becca Ellis, professional accountancy major from Rock Rapids, Iowa and Enactus president. "Spearfish is an active community and it was a good fit."

The initial funds for the Business Leadership Scholarship came from the former BHSU chapter of Phi Beta Lambda. When the chapter disbanded four years ago, the Enactus Team took over the fundraising for the scholarship. The Enactus Team has staged a 5K race each fall for the past three years to build scholarship funds. The Scholar Dollar 5K raises awareness both for the Business Leadership Scholarship and for the BHSU Enactus Team, which teaches the free enterprise system to those on campus and throughout the region.

"The Enactus Team accepts the scholarship drive as a long-term commitment with an outcome that will eventually assist a business student at BHSU," said Dr. Barbara Looney, assistant professor of management at BHSU and Enactus co-advisor. "The planning and staging of the 5K are part of the experiential learning students gain through their affiliation with Enactus and the University."

According to Steve Meeker, Vice President of University Advancement, a scholarship fund needs a base asset of about $10,000 before annual scholarship awards can be sustained. Right now, the Business Leadership Scholarship total is about $5,200. For more information on how to donate to this or other scholarships, contact Steve Meeker at 605-642-6228 or Steve.Meeker@bhsu.edu.

"Enactus is all about empowering people and making sure they can sustain their empowerment," Ellis said. "School is a great way to do that. You learn and you set yourself up for life. If we can help someone out through a scholarship, that's a big thing."
